Lactate Testing
Know your numbers. Train with purpose.
Take the guesswork out of endurance training with lactate testing that identifies how your body responds to increasing exercise intensity.
Using a graded exercise test on a treadmill or bike, we progressively increase the intensity while collecting small lactate samples. Your results provide valuable insight into your physiological profile and help establish personalised training zones based on how your body actually responds to exercise.
What is lactate testing?
Lactate is produced by your muscles during exercise, with blood lactate levels changing as exercise intensity increases. By measuring these changes during a controlled, progressive exercise test, we can build a picture of your individual physiological response to exercise. Unlike generic training zones based on population averages, lactate testing helps provide individualised data that reflects your current fitness and physiology.
Why test lactate?
Your training zones can have a significant impact on how effectively you train. Lactate testing can help you:
- Establish personalised training zones
- Understand how your body responds to different exercise intensities
- Better target easy, moderate and high-intensity training
- Guide pacing and intensity for endurance events
- Monitor changes in fitness over time
- Make your training more specific to your physiology
- Track the impact of your training program
How does lactate testing work?
01 — Choose your modality
Testing can be completed on a treadmill or bike, depending on your sport and training requirements.
02 — Complete a graded exercise test
You'll begin at a manageable intensity, with the workload progressively increasing through each stage.
03 — Lactate is measured
At intervals throughout the test, we collect a small blood sample to measure your blood lactate concentration.
04 — Reach maximal effort
The test continues as exercise intensity increases until maximal effort is reached, allowing us to assess your response across a broad range of intensities.
05 — Understand your results
Your lactate data is analysed alongside your exercise performance to build a picture of your individual physiological profile and establish training zones.
Who can benefit from lactate testing?
Lactate testing can be particularly useful for athletes who want to better understand and optimise their endurance training.
Runners
From 5 km runners to marathoners, use individualised data to guide training intensity and race preparation.
Cyclists
Understand your physiological response to increasing power and develop training zones specific to your current fitness.
Triathletes
Take a more objective approach to endurance training and better understand the intensity demands of your sport.
Endurance athletes
Whether you're preparing for a specific event or simply looking to train more effectively, lactate testing provides objective data to help guide your program.
Lactate testing + VO₂ max
For a more complete picture of your endurance performance, lactate testing can be incorporated alongside VO₂ max testing.
During a graded exercise test, we can measure oxygen consumption while also collecting lactate samples. Together, these measures provide deeper insight into your aerobic capacity, physiological response, and training zones.
Train with data. Not guesswork.
Your body isn't average — so your training shouldn't have to be.
Lactate testing provides objective, individualised data that can help you understand your current physiology and train at the right intensity for your goals.
